Southern Gothic Romanticism
  Southern Gothic Romanticism is where you have a part in a story where the author talks about or describes emotion of the characters. Some of these emotions include what the reader is thinking about. Sometimes this gothic romanticism has intense, scary, or horrifying effects.  Sometimes it can be deeply flawed and disturbing. Most of the time the characters create a crime or they are punished for something bad. The story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own," and the story, "A Rose For Emily," both have Gothic Romanticism in the stories. These two stories both describe the feelings of the characters or what is even going on. These stories ease your mind and make you think about life situations. In the story, " The Life You Save May Be Your Own", the character shows intense feelings. Just like with the match that Mr. Shiftler stuck on his shoe, "He held the burning match as if he were studying the mystery of flame while it traveled dangerously toward his skin." Everyone obviously had a reaction to him doing that. It seemed as if it were a bit crazy when I first read it, but It tells us what he had running through his mind whenever he did it. The daughter thought that it was going to burn his nose, but he told her, "People do it now days anyway." And In the Story, "A Rose For Emily", it talks about death and dying. These two stories and their literature compare romanticism and gothic romanticism because these two stories talk about troubles, death and feelings about the character's. The feelings that let the reader know what is being told from their perspective.

In the Story, "A Rose For Emily", her crime Is undetected until her death because it had to of been affected someway by the taxes. The four men that came into her yard like burglars, and when she checked the next day, the smell was no longer there. She started to become too ill and everyone started to pitty her. All of the town started to disgrace her and didn't believe a word she had to say. They were too caught up in trying to make it difficult on her. Its like they pushed it onto her, they knew eventually she wouldn't be getting anything out of the whole situation.

In The story, "The Life You Save May Be Your Own", It was a good place to have the hitch hiker in the story because it mentioned why Mr. shifter did what he did. Like,  "There were times when Mr. Shiftlet preferred not to be alone. He felt too that a man with a car had a responsibility to others and he kept his eye out for a hitch‑hiker." He tells why he thinks of the hitchhiker the way he does. He told him, "Drive carefully. The life you save may be your own." It was like it was advise givin at the right time being. Makes sense. The hitch hiker gets angry and starts screaming at him. The feelings that, that man was feeling was mad, sad and frustrating. He told him to go to hell for saying stuff about his mother. It made the story intense and its what made the story get freaky. Like a real life situation.

 

   The Legend Of Sleepy Hallow

    The Legend Of Sleepy Hallow catches the readers attention because at the very beginning it sways into what the story will mostly be about. Like, "In the bosom.." and "The dominate spirit that haunts.." This story goes into full detail. The author describes emotions, tone and then he goes into a higher depth about what the story will even be about and he makes sure the readers
gets the whole concept of  what the author is even talking about. The story catches the eye of the
reader also, because it has a dark and gloomy part to the whole story, but behind it all its like a whole other way of making the "Headless Horseman" pop to the reader. After all the Headless   horseman is the main focus. "A most heretical disbeliever in ghosts, how he met the horseman  returning from his foray into Sleepy Hollow, and was obliged to get up behind him.." This quote tells us about the natural spirit and what The Headless Horseman does to the other characters in the story who play along. This Story catches your eye on every stanza because it brings your  attention on everything.

         


             Swing Low, Sweet Chariot  
     
 This song is escaping the physical conditions of slavery because in the line, "A band of angels
 coming after me.." its like the slaves are ready for the day that they go to heaven with all of their friends and family. They wont have to hurt anymore and feel pain from all the work that they've  had to do. The song is religious about faith and hope because the whole song is talking about going to heaven and "If you get there before I do" and "But still my soul feels heavenly bound..  it shows us the happy feeling and relief a person has because they know that when you get to  heaven you will be free and God will be there with you. The slaves that got punished and hurt will no longer go through that anymore. They're safe. This song is very reflected to this time period because today we know the history of what slavery was like and what people did to the blacks. It wasn't fair. We see how much pain they were in and this song just sends a sensation of sadness through your body. It tells us the emotion that these slaves felt.
